FAQs AND ANSWERS

This is the most common question by many new users who are still learning to manage their stoma. Check for any of the following:
  • Correct Size and Cutting of Skin Barrier Adhesive Disc: If you are using smaller or larger than required size of adhesive disc, stoma appliance may leak frequently. Seek guidance for correct size and cutting.
  • Skin Preparation: Make sure the skin is clean and dry before adhering skin barrier adhesive disc. Follow proper skin preparation method.
  • Use of Modified Appliances for Specified Stoma. At times the stoma is retracted (below skin level) or is close to incision or is close to skin fold or is near bony prominence. Use convex adhesive or flexible adhesive pouch.
  • Empty the pouch when 1/3rd is filled as excessive weight in pouch (stoma bag) can also cause leakage.
  • Physical Activities like driving, sports, walking long distance, dancing, , sex, etc can be done after wearing extra support belt or Abdominal Binder. Use closed end one piece pouch while swimming.
  • Loose stool or Diarrhea may also cause leakage. Seek medical help.
  • Bathing with hot water or shower coming in direct contact with stoma bag may cause leakage. Use warm water and do not put hot/warm water direct on stoma bag.
Leakage or 7 days whichever is earlier. Leakage must be avoided at any cost. The pouch must be changed immediately after leakage to avoid skin irritation and skin breakdown. If no leakage occurs for 5 to 7 days, then remove skin barrier adhesive and clean the skin or take bath. Put gauge piece on stoma and allow skin to breathe for some time. Use new appliance.
It may take few weeks for the skin to adapt to skin barrier adhesive. In some people it may take many weeks. Keep the skin around stoma clean and dirt free. Do not touch stoma or stoma bag unnecessarily. Seek guidance for using Skin protective film wipe that will form a protective covering on the skin to reduce skin irritation.
Measure size of stoma and chose size of adhesive disc that is larger enough to accommodate stoma. Leave enough adhesive margin to cover surrounding skin between the flange and stoma. The adhesive should not touch the stoma too tight and at the same time the adhesive should not leave any skin exposed to stomal secretions. The skin must be covered and protected completely. Seek guidance for what accessories are required and what is not required. Many people don't need so many accessories.
